Preserving your memories for the
next millenium

From "5 ways to save your papers in a natural disaster" on MSN Money: " Ask victims of fires what they regret the most, and it’s typically the loss of family photos and memorabilia. There’s probably no way to make a copy of Grandma’s quilt, but you can make sure most of your photo memories survive... Scan any iconic family photos... and make CDs of those, as well. (If you don’t have a scanner, ask a friend who does, or have them professionally done.)"
When I inherited my grandmother’s collection of antique family photos, I felt overwhelmed with responsibility. I quickly decided that I should create digital copies of the images to share with the rest of my family and to prevent loss in case of a disaster. In the process of preserving my families photographs, I gained extensive experience with image capture and editing software. I shared my experience with a co-worker, who expressed interest in having me do similar work for her. After doing additional work for another co-worker, I decided to begin offering my services to others.

Services
~ Photo Restoration ~
Handling, storage, and water/fire damage are just a
few of the things that can blemish a photograph. In addition, even photographs as recent as the 1980's may have
some color fading or loss of contrast. Fortunately, now tools exist to digitally repair the damage so that
a new print can be made that will look like new and last for years to come.

Adobe Acrobat Reader. You can download
Acrobat Reader, if you do not have it.

Digital scanning of photo collections ~
Digital images can be
reproduced quickly and easily for your family and friends. Multiple copies of
the CDs of the digital images will help ensure that no images are lost due to
disasters. Often, when someone loses their home due to fire or flood, the items
they wish they could have saved are their photographs.
Many companies offer to digitize your photographs. However, they
may use cheap storage media that can disintegrate in a few years, and they offer
no solutions for migrating the files. Using my knowledge of preservation standards
for digitization, I can offer long-term solutions to the problems of digital
media. My services can help ensure that the digital versions of your images
will be useful in the future, not just the present.
~ Web page construction to share images with family members ~
Have you wanted to make
a web page, but haven't had the time or energy, or lack the technical knowledge
to develop a page to suit your needs? I can work with you to develop a page
that suits your specifications.
~
Organization and cataloging of photo collections ~
Using skills based in
my education and experience as a librarian, I can help organize your collection
to facilitate access. I can develop a catalog of your photo collection using
printed format, a computer file format, and/or a web-based format.
~ Archival storage solutions to preserve photo collections ~
My education in preservation
allows me to offer a unique perspective about how to ensure long-term preservation
of your photographs. I can assist with selection and purchasing of storage solutions
that adhere to the standards of the preservation community.
Retouching
Digital Images (includes free CD):
Adjust
contrast/brightness/color balance: $4.00 per image
Scanning only: $1.00 per image
Many photographs can look like new by simply adjusting the contrast, brightness,
and/or color. However, if a photo needs more retouching, such as removing stains
or repairing tears, I can repair those problems as well. For any repairs in
addition to the ones listed above, I charge $15.00 per hour, billed in 10 minute
increments (i.e., $5 for 20 minutes, $10 for 40 minutes, etc.) The amount of
time it takes varies depending on the extent and placement of the damage. Slight
damage only takes about 10 minutes, heavy damage takes about an hour. The maximum
charge per photograph is $20.00 unless another price is negotiated when I give
you my estimate.
